For cel-shading, I reference my tones from the anime template I assembled (just a white, blank PSD file that has all of my most used colors for hair, skin, etc.) and make sure I stay true to my lighting sources.
If you note, in the tree tutorial, how I lock my tree layer, so that no paint goes anywhere but the tree, you can basically get the jist of how my cel-shade works.
Each object (hair, skin) goes on a different layer. When I apply the base colors for each layer, I lock it and then shade. This way, there is no mess, no fuss. As long as your base coloring is in the lines, your shading will never stray~
Anyway, I'm sure that while I revamp all of my old tutorials I'll come back to this and make it clearer (ie. with pictures).

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
